What is an Eye Exam?
This is a procedure carried out by an optometrist to determine if a patient requires spectacles and if so to determine the correct prescription for him/her.
Our examinations are tailored to your individual needs so if you are experiencing difficulties, our fully comprehensive eye examination will concentrate on finding any vision related problems and give you the appropriate advice or treatment. If there is an inheritable vision problem such as glaucoma in the family will we ensure that this is carefully looked at and arrange further special assessment if this is found necessary.
With the new technology and equipment now available at all our practices, eye examinations are much easier on you the patient; with such advancements it is much easier to detect conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, AMD (age related macula degenerations).
This is why a periodic comprehensive eye examination is important, even if you do not need spectacles.
During your examination you will:
- Be asked about your general state of health and about any medication you are taking.
- Be tested to see if you need spectacles, and if so, what prescription is required.
- Have the health of the inner and outer eye checked to ensure they are healthy.
- Receive additional tests for various eye conditions depending on your individual needs.
- Be asked questions about how you use your sight, i.e. for driving, work, hobbies, sports etc.
It is only through the above detailed history that we can best cater to you individual eye care needs.
An eye examination is an important health check on your eyes, whether you need spectacles or not. Everyone is advised to have an eye examination every two years, or more frequently if recommended by the optometrist.
Regular eye examinations are important because:
- eye diseases can be detected before affecting your sight
- early detection ensures prompt treatment
- any prescription for spectacles stays up-to-date
After The Eye Exam
Your optometrist will tell you about the standard of your vision, the health of your eyes and any individual visual requirements you may have. You will be told whether spectacles are required and what to use them for. You will be advised when your next eye examination is due.
If spectacles are required, you will be advised on frame styles and lens types suitable for your lifestyle and visual needs.
We will send you a reminder when you are next due for an eye examination, but if you have any questions before then, please feel free to contact us.

Domiciliary/Home Visits
We at Sheppard Opticians have a “mobile unit” set up to facilitate eye testing at home. This service is provided for people who are housebound and are unable to attend our in practice eye clinic.
We carry out your eye examination in the comfort of your own home, bringing with us a selection of frames for you to choose from and discuss the lenses that you require.
If you have a medical card you can avail of this service for free once an application form has been filled out and approval has been obtained. If not you can arrange to have it done privately.
